Warning of disruption in Belfast City Centre due to protests and parades

The first morning parade will be Belfast Tartan Day organised by the Ulster Scots Agency

There has been a warning of disruption in Belfast City Centre today due to a number of planned protests and parades taking place.

Police have warned members of the public to be prepared for disruption throughout the city centre on Saturday, November 29, due to the parades and protests taking place between 11.30am and 3pm.

The first parade, organised by the Ulster Scots Agency to celebrate Belfast Tartan Day, will begin at 11.30am with participants gathering at Gordon Street before proceeding to City Hall via Dunbar Link, Great Patrick Street, York Street, Royal Avenue, Donegall Place, Donegall Square North, Donegall Square East and Donegall Square South.

The second parade, organised by Boyne Bridge Defenders Historical Group, will start at Sandy Row before making its way to Belfast City Hall via Glengall Street, Victoria Street, College Square East, Wellington Place and Donegall Square North.

Another parade and protest organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign will start at 12.30 at Writer’s Square before making its way to Belfast City Hall via Donegall Street, Royal Avenue, Donegall Place and Donegall Square North.

Police have said the Christmas Market will remain open via the side gates on Donegall Square West and East.

The PSNI has said: “an appropriate and proportionate policing response will be provided, with officers on the ground before and during the events to ensure public safety and assist with traffic diversions and temporary road closures.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Members of the public are advised to expect traffic disruption in Belfast City Centre on Saturday, 29 th November due to a number of planned parades and protests taking place between 11.30am and 3pm. “A parade is expected to begin at 11.30am, assembling at Gordon Street before proceeding to City Hall. The route will be along Gordon Street, Dunbar Link, Great Patrick Street, York Street, Royal Avenue, Donegall Place, Donegall Square North, Donegall Square East and Donegall Square South. “A second parade will assemble at Sandy Row at 12.30pm before taking the following route: Sandy Row onto Glengall Street, Victoria Street, College Square East, Wellington Place and Donegall Square North. A rally at Belfast City Hall is expected to finish at around 2pm. “There is expected to be a number of protests at Belfast City Hall. “Also a parade from Writers’ Square at 12.30pm, taking in Donegall Street, Royal Avenue, Donegall Place and Donegall Square North to Belfast City Hall until 3pm. “A rally will take place at Queen’s Square between 2.15pm and 2.45pm. The Christmas Market is open with access via the side gates on Donegall Square West and East.”
