“Reopening the Knockmore Line would be a game-changer for transport, connectivity and economic development”
A Northern Ireland MP is urging local residents to sign a letter calling for progress on a disused railway line between Antrim and Lisburn via Belfast International Airport.
South Antrim MP Robin Swann has launched a public call for local residents to add their names to a letter he will be sending in early December to the Minister for Infrastructure, urging clarity and progress on the long-awaited reopening of the Knockmore railway line and connecting to Belfast International Airport.
The letter addressed to Minister Liz Kimmins, highlights the significant economic, social and connectivity benefits that the restored line would bring to communities across South Antrim, and calls on the Department for Infrastructure to set out a firm and transparent timeline for the project.

Since it closed in 2003, there has been long-standing support for reinstating the Knockmore rail line, which would reconnect Crumlin, Glenavy and Ballinderry and extend the service to Belfast International Airport.
Campaigners say the move could also have a significant beneficial impact on accessibility and in increased public transport options in places such as Templepatrick and Ballyclare and other towns and villages throughout the area.
Pressure is mounting following news this week that a proposed new extension plan for Belfast City Airport could make it the first airport on the island of Ireland to be connected by rail.
Translink is looking at potentially reconnecting the Knockmore route with a possible airport connection. As well as considering engineering requirements, demand forecasting and cost estimates, the study considered reopening the three stations previously in operation on this line.
In addition, three locations for a new station at Belfast International Airport are also being appraised to identify the preferred option.
Mr Swann said that residents have grown increasingly frustrated by repeated delays and shifting timelines around the feasibility study for the line, which was initially expected to be completed in the summer. He said:
“People across South Antrim deserve clarity. Reopening the Knockmore Line would be a game-changer for transport, connectivity and economic development across this constituency, and residents have made their support for it abundantly clear.”
The UUP man is inviting residents to add their names to his letter before it is formally submitted to the Minister in early December.
“This is an opportunity for the people of South Antrim to speak with one voice. The more signatures we gather, the stronger our message will be – that this project must be prioritised.”
The letter is available for residents to read and sign through Mr Swann’s constituency office and online here. For more information or to add your name, residents are encouraged to contact Robin Swann MP’s office.
