Met Office latest on whether NI will see snow as temperatures drop

Parts of Scotland could see lows of -8C

Temperatures across the UK and Ireland are set to drop as we move into the weekend.

With the Met Office forecasting that Belfast could drop to lows of 3C on Sunday, Northern Ireland may be set to wake up to the first frost of the season on Monday morning.

The forecasters have said it will initially be noticeably colder across the UK as we move into next week, especially in the north and east, with a “brisk northerly wind accentuating the colder feel” and bringing the first snow of the season for some areas.

Despite the incoming drop in temperatures, the Met Office told Belfast Live that it was “too early” to determine whether or not snow will fall across the country as we move further into November.

A spokesperson said: “Temperatures will be dropping in Northern Ireland over the weekend, bringing a hint of a wintery feel to the weather for many.

“However, while this shift to a cold northerly airflow will drop temperatures and initially introduce a chance of snow for some in Scotland at the start of next week, it’s too early to determine how that chance may progress to Northern Ireland as we go through the week.

“A cool pool of air is likely to remain in place for much of next week in Northern Ireland, but several things need to align for any significant snow to lower levels, including moisture in the air or the meeting of air masses.

“We’ll have more details on if the snow risk may spread from Scotland next week as we get closer to the time.”

The long-range weather forecast for the entire UK said that from Tuesday, the colder conditions already affecting the Scotland is likely to extend south

The Met Office said: “Initially we may see some less cold conditions with some cloud, rain and possibly hill snow affecting parts of the west. It is as this clears later Tuesday that the colder conditions will extend south, bringing some snow showers into northern parts, and the first frosts of the season for many parts of the south.

“Later in the period there is increasing uncertainty, but a trend towards more changeable conditions is possible, with some rain or showers in places, and perhaps some hill snow at times in the north. Temperatures overall likely to return to near-average.”
