Two men have already been charged over the alleged plot

Sinn Féin has expelled a party member following the arrest of her partner in connection with an alleged far-right plot to attack a mosque, as part of a large-scale cross-border investigation.

Two men have already been charged in relation to the alleged plot, and on Wednesday morning, officers from the anti-terror Special Detective Unit apprehended a third suspect.

It has come to light that the suspect’s partner was a Sinn Féin member in the Leinster area, but she has now been expelled. Sources have said that the man himself was never a Sinn Féin member.

The Irish Mirror was informed by the party that the female member was expelled on Saturday for not disclosing to the party that her home had been searched by Garda anti-terror officers as part of the investigation, which has already resulted in two men being charged.

Sources indicate that the partner of the former Sinn Féin member is suspected of participating in an alleged propaganda video that was confiscated during a Garda operation last week, reports the Irish Mirror.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that Garda detectives suspect the video, featuring four men, was filmed in the house of the man arrested on Wednesday.

This is also the residence of the ex-Sinn Féin member, who is not herself suspected of involvement in far-right activities.

On Thursday morning, Sinn Féin confirmed the expulsion in a statement to the Irish Mirror.

The statement read: “Sinn Féin’s National Chairperson Declan Kearney today [Thursday] confirmed that the partner of a female member of the party had been arrested as part of the investigation into last week’s arrest of two alleged far right extremists.”

Mr. Kearney stated: “We will not allow our party to be exposed to any far right elements. The far right have targeted our party for several years now with death threats, pickets on members’ homes and offices and more recently violent actions. We have worked carefully with the Gardaí, who have been active and vigilant in the face of these threats.”

The man was taken into custody at the home in Laois as part of an ongoing cross border investigation between the Garda and PSNI. He can be detained for up to three days.

Gardai confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement read: “This afternoon, Wednesday 12th November 2025, Gardaí arrested a third male in Co. Laois as part of this cross border terrorism related investigation.

“The male, aged in his 30s, is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in the midlands.

“The investigation continues to be led by An Garda Síochána Special Detective Unit.”

No further information is available at this time.”

In a statement, Mr Kearney expressed: “Last week’s arrest of two individuals alleged to be far-right extremists has caused huge concern across the country.

“It was the speedy action of Gardaí which prevented potentially devastating events occurring. The party was informed on Friday night that the home of a female party member and her partner had been raided, and he has since been arrested.

“The female party member was expelled from the party on Saturday evening as she failed to notify the party that her home was raided or inform the party about the associated seriousness of this situation.

“As this is a live and serious Garda investigation, we cannot say any more at this time.”
