Aidan Walsh has announced his retirement from boxing

Michaela Walsh has honoured her brother Aidan following his decision to hang up his gloves. She expressed that the 28-year-old has inspired her ‘more than words can ever explain’.

The siblings made history as the first brother and sister duo to compete together at the Olympics, taking part in both the Tokyo and Paris Games.

Aidan, who bagged a bronze at the Tokyo Games, announced his retirement on Monday. He paid homage to his older sister, describing it as ‘an absolute privilege’ to box alongside her.

On Tuesday, Michaela took to social media to laud her brother, stating that “the legacy you leave behind will inspire generations to come”, reports the Irish Mirror.

She penned: “Aidan, thank you. Not just for what you’ve achieved, but for the person you’ve become along the journey. Watching you grow, fight and carry yourself with such integrity has inspired me more than words can ever explain.

“You’ve had such an impact on my career and my life. You pushed me to be the best version of myself, to hold my standards high and to never settle. I always wanted to be the best role model I could be, not to let you down, but to live up to the example you set for me.

“You’ve given so much to this sport and the legacy you leave behind will inspire generations to come. But what makes me proudest isn’t what you’ve done, it’s who you are.

“I know the journey ahead for you will be even more exciting than what’s behind and while I’ll miss competing alongside you, I know you’ll always be there, wherever I go, whatever I do.

“From two kids from West Belfast, to becoming the first brother and sister to make it to the Olympic Games together, not once, but twice! Is something I could only ever have dreamed of.

“Forever proud of you, my brother. Enjoy your tins of coke.”
