Shock and devastation as much-loved Belfast hotel stalwart passes away

Robert (Bert) McGuinness has been remembered as “funny, bubbly and most notably kind”.

Tributes have been paid to much-loved Belfast hotel stalwart following his sudden death. Robert (Bert) McGuinness passed away suddenly at home on Monday, November 10. Known to all as Bert, many across the travel industry will have met him in his place of work, the Crowne Plaza Hotel on the outskirts of South Belfast.

A funeral notice said he was the husband of Gillian, much loved father of Christopher, Megan, Jessica and Brooke, loving grandfather of Laochra and Cláragh and also a loving brother of Margaret, Hugh and Louise. R.I.P.

He has been remembered by the team at NI Travel News as “funny, bubbly and most notably kind”.

They said: “Bert was always there at the drop of a hat for both the NI Travel News team, and our industry in attendance. Nothing was ever too much.

“His enthusiasm and drive stood out from the day the team met him, and from then, work relationships quickly changed to friendships, as it is with many of the Crowne Plaza Staff. The bonds that have been formed over the years remain firmly at the front of our minds learning this sad news.”

Speaking on his passing, Jonathan Adair, added: “Bert was at the heart of the success of the Big Event every year. His input and diligence to every part of the seamless operation and delivery of all the elements over the two days was truly incredible.

“I know the team at NI Travel News would have been lost without him. I am personally devastated by the news and will miss his professionalism and friendship very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bert’s family, friends and wider circle, especially Louise, Lisa, Anneka and the rest of the team at the Crowne Plaza.”

A spokesperson for the Irish Motorbike Awards said: “Everyone on the Bike Awards team is devastated to hear this sad news. Bert was an amazing member of Crowne Plaza staff – friendly, fun, and always made time for everyone. He also ensured our event ran smoothly every year. We will miss Bert very much and our thoughts are with his family, and all the staff at the hotel.”

Many others took to social media to pay tribute to the “kindest soul you could ever meet”.

One person said: “The saddest news today, a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with these last few years. Sending strength to all Bert’s loved ones. Rest in peace.”

Another added: “It’s very rare to come across someone like Bert in this world, grateful I had the experience to. Truly a one in a million guy.”

“The nicest guy you could ever have met. It was a pleasure working for you,” said a third.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
