A woman remains in a life-threatening condition following an incident on October 31
A man has been arrested in Northern Ireland over an alleged hit and run in London that has left a 65-year-old pedestrian fighting for her life.
Police were called to Southend Lane, Lewisham, south-east London, on October 31 and the woman remains in a life-threatening condition, the Metropolitan Police said on Sunday.
Michael McLaughlin, of Heath Park, Buncrana, in the Republic of Ireland, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road traffic collision.
McLaughlin was arrested on a motorway in Northern Ireland by Police Service of Northern Ireland officers on Friday, the Met said.
The 38-year-old was escorted to England and interviewed at a south London police station.
He is in custody and will appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
In a statement on Facebook the PSNi said: “Road Policing Interceptors (Sprucefield) & Road Policing Unit (Mahon Road) working together and assisted by one of our Collision Investigation Unit Officers stopped this Red Nissan van on the M1 Westbound this morning using pre-emptive tactics in order to prevent the likelihood of a pursuit.
“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police in London were requesting this vehicle stopped and the driver arrested after it was reported to have been involved in a very serious injury Road Traffic Collision and made off from the scene.
“The driver was arrested in relation to the alleged offences and the vehicle and mobile devices seized for Forensic examination.
The male driver will now be handed over to our colleagues in the Metropolitan Police to progress the investigation.”
