The holidaymakers were swept into the sea at a popular tourist spot

At least three individuals have tragically lost their lives, with several others injured after being swept into turbulent seas in Tenerife at a popular holiday spot.

Those harmed in the incident in Puerto de la Cruz primarily suffered trauma from impact against rocks or the pier. The holidaymakers were swept into the sea around 3pm yesterday, November 8.

The first death was confirmed by emergency services later that evening.

A statement from the Canary Islands Emergency Services revealed that one of the affected women went into cardiorespiratory arrest at the time of assistance.

A medical ambulance, a sanitised ambulance and three basic life support units were dispatched to the scene, as reported by the Daily Express. Local police, national police and Maritime Rescue also attended to collaborate in rescuing the victims and securing the area, reports the Mirror.

The official report from the emergency services stated: “A woman died and nine injured when she fell into the water after a sea blow in Tenerife at Puerto de la Cruz Pier at 3pm.”

Emergency services issued a warning over rough seas, advising people: “Do not position yourself at the end of piers or breakwaters, nor risk taking photographs or videos near where the waves break”.

Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, echoed the warning on social media, adding: “We must not lower our guard. We remain on pre-alert due to coastal phenomena.”
