Councillor McDowell described Michelle O’Neill’s attendance at the event as “nothing more than political point-scoring”

The TUV’s deputy leader has confirmed that he will not attend Sunday’s Remembrance service at the Belfast Cenotaph due to First Minister Michelle O’Neill accepting an invite to attend for the second year.

On Thursday, it was confirmed that Michelle O’Neill will once again lay a laurel wreath at the cenotaph in the grounds of City Hall to remember those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The TUV deputy leader, Councillor Ron McDowell, said that once again, he will not attend the event with the First Minister while “she continues to eulogise the IRA.”

“I will be marking Remembrance Day this year with the Royal British Legion and will also lay a wreath at the Belfast Cenotaph on behalf of my constituents,” he said.

“However, I will not share a ceremony with Michelle O’Neill. As the First Minister continues to eulogise the IRA, her attendance on Sunday would be nothing more than political point-scoring. I cannot pretend this is acceptable to me.

“Therefore, after consultation with victims of the IRA and to satisfy my own convictions, I have once again taken the difficult decision to mark the 11th hour in the company of those doing so sincerely.”
