Eora/Sydney trio Moderate Lovers follow up the power pop fuzz-infused serious message of their last single ‘Lost City’ (reviewed by me here) with a glorious sunshine filled ray of light in the single ‘Lucy’s Gardening Agin’. Filled with a delicious wry sense of humour and a sparkle you need sunglasses for, this is an hyperactive effervescent joy that brings to mind The Kinks jamming in a room with Teenage Fanclub and The Lightning Seeds: all harmonies, melodies and jangling guitars.
According to the band,
Lucy’s Gardening Again’ is song which emerged after singer/songwriter Mick Wilson watched the nearly eight-hour Beatles docuseries Get Back.
It’s about the joyful simplicity of summertime gardening, inspired by his friend and neighbor Lucy…
The lyrics display a warmth as gentle as the sounds and an endearing humour:
Lucy’s gardening again
She’d almost filled her basket when
Picking all the ripe pumpkins
Before the rain comes
She’ll be the one to save
The aubergines from fallin’
Her wide straw hat confirms the fact
She comes from Adelaide
