Following their recent award win I had to give it a go
The winner of NI’s first-ever best croissant competition was crowned this week and when I heard this I knew I had to try the spot that took the coveted title.
It went to Mamo Patisserie which is based in St. George’s Market to give this award winning croissant and go and see if it lived up to the hype.
I did a quick Google and seen that it was only open Friday to Sunday which lines up with the open hours of the market. I also found out during my research that this spot sells out almost every day so I went down the minute they opened at 8am to make sure I got my hands on what I wanted.
I was immediately met with queue even though it was first thing in the morning – so I knew I was in for something good. I stood in the queue for around 45 minutes and when I got in I was met with a quaint little shop that looked like something you would find on the streets of Paris.
What I got:
A croissant – This was the main thing I went in for so it had to be first on my list.
A crookie – This was a combination of a croissant and cookie topped with caramel. I’d never seen it before but it fit the theme of the day so I picked it up too.
A cherry ‘viral LA dessert’ – I’d seen these all over my TikTok so while I was there I thought I would also try these out.
What I liked:
This croissant absolutely lived up to the hype and really deserved its recent award. It was absolutely massive, roughly the size of my head for reference. This was also one of the most beautiful croissants I’ve ever seen, real thought and care has gone into the presentation which I really appreciate. The taste also absolutely matched the looks, and I will put it out there that this is the nicest croissant I’ve ever had here.
The cherry ‘viral LA dessert’ was one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever seen. All of their hyper-realistic desserts looked brilliant. Often cherry flavoured things can be very tart but this was the perfect balance. I really enjoyed it and I definitely bought into the novelty of the presentation and decadence of this. I can see why they’ve gone viral!
The final thing that I got was the crookie and I honestly think I might have found my new favourite sweet treat. I have a sweet tooth so anything with caramel will always get a seal of approval from me. This was really something else in my opinion. The combination was genius, so really well done to whoever came up with that. I will think about it often throughout the weekend.
What we didn’t like/would change:
Obviously I’m not going to love queueing for 45 minutes for anything. However, I do think that this was worth every minute of it. It’s a special treat and I do think that the wait added to it.
Cost:
This came to £13.50 for all 3 of the items that I got on my visit. The croissant was £2.50, the crookie was £4.50 and the cherry was £6.50. This is absolutely expensive but it is a special treat that is worth every penny.
I genuinely think this place is really incredible. They’ve created art in food and everything about it is spot on. The guys in the store were the nicest people and chatted me through everything on offer.
The people around me in the queue were celebrating birthdays and taking their kids out for a half-term treat so it shows why people are heading here. So will the queue and the price be for everyone? No. However, it was absolutely for me!
