Emmerdale viewers were left stunned as a new police officer arrived in the Dales

Emmerdale fans were left floored as they realised where they’ve seen newcomer DS Carter before.

The Dales has been gripped by drama in recent weeks, with two major storylines taking centre stage.

The first sees April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) reluctantly peddling drugs for Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) as she desperately tries to clear her boyfriend Dylan Penders’ (Fred Kettle) debt.

It later emerged that local farmer Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) was pulling the strings behind the drugs operation, whilst also being Ray’s mum.

Another hard-hitting storyline revolves around Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley). His secret prison spouse, Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill), has recently turned up in the village, leaving his former husband Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) fuming, reports the Daily Star.

In Monday’s (October 27) instalment, which can now be watched on ITVX, friction escalated at the café between Aaron and Robert when new police officer DS Carter turned up to quiz Kev about an assault on an old friend.

“Do you know a man called Chris Hall?” she enquired, with Kev confirming they were once “thick as thieves” but he hadn’t seen him lately.

“Are you sure about that? I have it on good authority that you attacked him,” Carter continued.

Following her interrogation of Kev, Carter spotted Ray on the opposite side of Main Street and started heading towards him. Ray swiftly dumped a carrier bag stuffed with drugs before going over to have a word with the officer.

“Mr Walters, what a pleasant surprise. Didn’t know you did business in this neck of the woods. Since you’re here, can we have a quick chat? I’ve got a few questions about your business ventures,” Carter said.

“What I do is supply top quality, pre-loved machines for a fraction of the price,” Ray replied, with Carter bluntly adding: “Why do you imagine this is of any interest to me?

“I have [checked your website]. It looks like a cut and paste job to me. It’s all fiction, isn’t it?”

Ray insisted that he’s turned his life around, but the police officer didn’t seem so sure, saying: “You show your face around here and suddenly there’s a flood of drugs in the area. Am I supposed to pretend that’s a coincidence?”

Carter then observed Ray leave, unknowingly preventing him from collecting his bag, which was accidentally placed on top of Ross Barton’s (Michael Parr) belongings as he moved into Dale View.

DS Carter is portrayed by actress Lisa Diveney, with several Emmerdale viewers only just realising that she previously starred in a hit British drama.

Throughout the years, Lisa has appeared in Call the Midwife, Cleansed and biopic Enid, as well as several theatre productions.

However, Lisa is most recognised for her role as Beth in the Only Fools and Horses spin-off The Green Green Grass, where she appeared for three seasons.

After watching Lisa appear on Emmerdale, many soap fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts. “That police officer looks familiar,” one individual posted on a Facebook fan page, with another chiming in: “Omg she’s from that Only Fools spin-off!”

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 at 7.30pm and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX
