Ireland faces weather cocktail chaos as forecaster issues Halloween storm alert

Met Eireann is tracking a potential ‘weather cocktail’ storm for the day before Halloween that could bring a triple threat of conditions to Ireland

Autumn has arrived, bringing with it increasingly unsettled weather across Ireland. Temperatures have dipped sharply, with overnight lows approaching freezing in some areas, and daytime highs struggling to reach double digits.

Met Eireann has warned that this spell of unpredictable conditions looks set to continue – and it is currently tracking a monster Atlantic system that could become Ireland’s next named storm of the season.

While there is still some uncertainty about its path and intensity, the national forecaster has flagged Thursday – the day before Halloween – as the potential day of impact.

It warned that the system could unleash weather cocktail chaos across the country. Met Eireann has outlined the triple threat it could bring, saying: “There is uncertainty in the forecast but a spell of wet and blustery or windy weather is possible on Thursday or Thursday night.”

Weather models currently show Ireland getting soaked by rain on Thursday, with powerful gusts of wind adding to the chaos.

In the meantime, Ireland will see mixed conditions over the coming days, with wet and breezy conditions continuing to sweep across the country.

Giving a day by day breakdown of what to expect, the national forecaster said: “Outbreaks of rain or drizzle will spread gradually southeastwards across the country Sunday and it will become breezy. The rain will clear to scattered showers over the northern half of the country during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 10C to 13C with a moderate to fresh and gusty westerly wind developing.

“A dry start for most Monday morning, but it will be cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle in the west and southwest and there’ll be a few showers in Ulster. The cloud and rain will spread eastwards across the rest of the country during the afternoon. Moderate to fresh westerly winds, easing for a time but increasing again across Connacht and Munster through the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 10C to 14C.

“Plenty of dry and bright weather on Tuesday. Some showers will develop though, mainly in the north and west. Highest temperatures of 11C to 13C with moderate to fresh westerly winds.

“Cloud will linger in the south on Wednesday morning, bringing patchy light rain or drizzle. Otherwise it will be mainly dry with sunny spells, although some showers will continue to affect the northwest. During the late afternoon and evening, cloud will increase and rain will develop over the southern half of the country. Highest temperatures of 10C to 12C with moderate to fresh southwest to west winds, becoming strong for a time in Ulster.

“There is uncertainty in the forecast but a spell of wet and blustery or windy weather is possible on Thursday or Thursday night.”
