Hit Channel 4 show The Great British Bake Off is currently back on our screens as contestants battle it out to be the best amateur baker, and Iain Ross, from Co Derry, has already become a firm favourite with many viewers. However, some are only just realising who the 29-year-old software engineer reminds them of.

Iain, who also has a love of live music as well as sourdough, initially, had no plans of appearing on the show, however when his girlfriend Dervla wouldn’t take no for an answer, he finally applied. But Channel 4 viewers are certainly glad he did, with many describing him as ‘adorable’ online and now they’ve also noticed one other thing about him – how much he looks like a certain children’s TV character.

What character are we talking about we hear you ask? Well none other than Sir Gadabout from the children’s book Zog, which has also been made into an animated BBC film.

One viewer called Katie took to X recently to talk about the resemblance, as she wrote: “For weeks I’ve struggled to think of who Iain reminds me of and it took my son wearing his Zog pyjamas for me to finally realise that it’s Sir Gadabout. #GBBO.”

It seems like many agreed with her, as the post racked up more than 66,000 views and thousands of likes too.

One person replied: “Thank you. I’ve been thinking exactly the same thing!”

While another added: “Oh my goodness! Absolutely nailed it!”

A third chimed in: “Thank you, I’ve been so confused why he looked so familiar,” while a fourth said: “You are not wrong!”

A further fan exclaimed: “It’s literally him,” while another simply concurred: “Yes!”

Talking about getting on the show, Iain told Radio Times: “Every step of the way I kept it a secret from everyone apart from Dervla, I didn’t think I’d make it to the following stage and I didn’t want to let anyone down.

“Then when I got the call to confirm my place I was in sheer disbelief, I had no idea it would actually happen.”

He added: “I thought it was a prank at first, I got a call a few minutes after being told and I thought they were going to tell me they made a mistake and I wasn’t actually on the show!

“I was in the office at work and had to go out to the foyer to take the call and speak in code, everyone who was walking past heading to the toilet looked very concerned and confused.”

Iain, who lives in Belfast with Dervla and their cat Victor, revealed on the show he was planning to propose to her, and has since revealed on his social media pages that she has accepted.

His emotional post showed Dervla showing off a sparkling ring against the backdrop of Crawfordsburn waterfall in Northern Ireland.

Alongside the photo, he wrote: “Don’t suppose you know anyone who can make a decent wedding cake?”

He then added: “A picture at this waterfall every year for the past 8 years, and a special lil one to complete the frame.”
