Defending Tyrone and Ulster club champions Errigal Ciaran suffered a two-point defeat to 2023 champions Trillick despite the Canavan brothers linking up for a stunning first half goal
Errigal Ciaran might have lost their Tyrone and Ulster titles over the weekend, but footage of their stunning first half goal has gone viral after the Canavan brothers linked up for a remarkable goal.
The Dunmoyle men lost out to 2023 champion Trillick in a typically competitive Tyrone SFC semi-final clash in O’Neills Healy Park on Sunday evening.
The game was nip-and-tuck for large periods of the game, but the Reds hit the final four points of the game to claim a hard-fought 1-13 to 1-11 win.
They’ll face either Loughmacrory or Carrickmore in the final after the first semi-final finished in a 0-19 to 1-16 draw in Pomeroy.
While Errigal were below their brilliant best, they did show moments of sheer class, none more so when Darragh Canavan played a stunning cross-field ball with the outside of his boot to his younger brother Ruairi.
Ghosting in behind his marker Michael Gallagher, Ruairi Canavan didn’t have to break stride as he took the ball on the run and tucked the ball low into the far corner of the net.
Errigal Ciaran manager Enda McGinley, meanwhile, rued the amount of uncharacteristic mistakes made by his men, but conceded that Trillick were the better team on the day.
“I suppose you always know a game can still twist either way coming down the stretch and it did.” said McGinley.
“Unfortunately, it went against us and then we had a couple of chances at the end or a couple of attacks. We had full control of the ball and we didn’t get the shot off so again that was disappointing.
“But look, the lads have shown immense work over the past two years.
“I’m immensely proud of them, they went down fighting today and best of luck to Trillick in the rest of it.”
No team has retained the Tyrone title since Carrickmore in 2005. When asked why the O’Neill Cup is so difficult to retain, McGinley replied: “It’s all the good teams and you always have to be on it and if you’re ever slightly off it then you’re at risk of going out.
“We obviously came up short today, Trillick played really well and we didn’t play. We probably weren’t clean enough in possession and it cost us in the end.”
