It was reported that Ahmed Abashar had threatened and harassed a couple in June of this year but they were questioned instead of the man facing rape charges
A couple say they reported on-the-run rapist Ahmed Abashar to police for harassment and threats earlier this year, but instead of investigating the man facing a sex assault trial, the pair found themselves being questioned.
The reports were made to the police in June of this year by a couple after they received a number of threats from Abashar who continued to target them for a number of weeks.
This happened after they had raised concerns about the rapist with a friend of theirs who was dating him at the time. She had told the couple about worrying behaviour he had, with the couple later telling Abashar to leave the woman alone before he began to harass them.

Speaking to Belfast Live, the source said that he reported the threats to the police, unaware that Abashar was facing a trial for rape and sexual assault, but never heard anything back from the force.
Then a few weeks later he found himself being questioned by police for allegedly harassing the soon-to-be convicted rapist.
While nothing ever progress regarding this, the police actually called at the couple’s house as part of their investigation following Abashar going missing ahead of his rape conviction in court in September of this year.
Ahmed Abashar didn’t appear at Laganside Court when he was convicted of raping a woman last month, after previously appearing at other dates throughout the trial. People have since issued a missing person appeal for the 31-year-old from the University Avenue area of South Belfast.
The man said: “We were first introduced to Abashar when he began dating a friend of my wife and she raised concerns about his behaviour. What we heard was quite disturbing and I confronted him and told him to leave the woman alone.
“After this we were then threatened and harassed by Abashar but when we reported this to the police we never heard anything about it.
“Then three weeks later we were contacted by an officer who wanted us to come in for questioning for harassing him. We really couldn’t quite believe it as they had made no effort to look into the reports that we had made.
“We were shocked, but not surprised, when we saw the news reports about him fleeing ahead of his rape conviction. But then police arrived at our door asking us if we knew where he was as they were searching for him, saying that he had apparently cleaned out his apartment before he fled.
“I can only imagine that he has fled the country back to Sudan. He really is a despicable individual and I just feel that if police looked into our concerns sooner, he may not have been out on bail and able to run from the courts so easily.”
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police received a report concerning allegations of domestic abuse related offences on 23rd June 2025.
“A 31-year-old man was arrested in connection with this report and questioned. Following questioning, he was released on bail pending further enquiries.
“Police reviewed all available evidence for this investigation which was dealt with under the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s No File Decision framework.
“Police received two reports of harassment on 26th June 2025 with counter allegations. These were both appropriately investigated by officers and all evidence reviewed.
“A file was been submitted to the Public Prosecution Service for review.”
