Police attended a flat in the Old Mill Drive area on Sunday after reports of a suspicious death

Police have confirmed they are no longer treating the death of a Newtownabbey woman as murder.

A 40-year-old man previously arrested in connection with the death of Mary McAdorey has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended a flat in the Old Mill Drive area of Newtownabbey on Sunday, October 12, following reports of a suspicious death, with a murder investigation later being launched.

The woman who died has been named locally as Mary McAdorey, a mother of two in her 20s. In an update issued on Monday evening, October 13, police confirmed her death is no longer being treated as murder following a post-mortem examination.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips, from the Major Investigation Team, said: “My thoughts are, first and foremost, with the woman’s family who are left trying to come to terms with the loss of their loved one.

“Following a post-mortem examination, the woman’s death is not being treated as murder at this time. Our enquiries, however, are continuing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.”

The detective added: “I would appeal to anyone with information to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 701 of 12/10/25.”

Cordons, and a police presence, remain in place at this time. Information can also be provided, with total anonymity, to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
