Rangers are on the hunt for a new manager after Steven Gerrard turned down the chance to return to the Scottish Premiership club, with Michael Carrick now in the frame
Rangers are reportedly considering a move for former Manchester United star Michael Carrick, who has been out of work since June, as they search for their next manager.
The Scottish heavyweights have had a disappointing start to their season, securing victory in only one of their seven league matches, leading to the dismissal of Russell Martin. Steven Gerrard was initially identified as the perfect candidate, but after several days of discussions, he declined the opportunity to return.
This has led Rangers back into the market, and according to Sky Sports, they are contemplating a move for Carrick. He was let go by Middlesbrough, where he had been at the helm for just under three years, guiding them to the play-offs in his first season, reports the Mirror.
Middlesbrough spent much of the previous season vying for a play-off spot, but a single win in their last six matches proved costly. They were in contention for a top-six finish until the final match of the season but ultimately ended up in 10th place.
Carrick also served as an assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford. He briefly took charge on the red side of Manchester and remained unbeaten during his temporary three-match tenure.
It is understood that Carrick is on a shortlist which also includes the likes of former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is another contender – he worked with Carrick in Manchester.
Ex-Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is also being considered.
Rangers have suffered multiple humiliations in European competition and find themselves a shocking 11 points behind Hearts, who currently lead the Scottish table.
Celtic have already opened up a nine-point gap with the Ibrox side desperately trying to break their dominance north of the border.
The club’s hierarchy are facing criticism following their latest appointment in Martin, who lasted merely 123 days in charge.
They have since stated: “When we took over the club this summer, we shared what we want to build for Rangers – to win trophies in Scotland and be able to compete at a high level in Europe.
“We know achieving these goals will take time, but our performances and results have not been good enough. We know you are frustrated – we are too. We did not get this right, and it’s our responsibility to fix it and get us back on track.”
