The BBC has unveiled a third series about the officers at the fictional Blackthorn police station
TV fans called Blue Lights one of the “best TV series ever” as it returned for a third run.
The police drama’s third season started on Monday (September 29) following hit series in 2023 and 2024. The opening episode of the BBC show saw the team shutting down a drug-fuelled party and working on a drugs bust.
Elsewhere a man died of an overdose at a plush club, and officer Grace Ellis (Sian Brooke) was troubled as she realised a girl she looked after when she was a social worker had become embroiled in some trouble.
Viewers were gripped by the action at the fictional Blackthorn police station and flocked to social media to heap praise on the Belfast-set show.
“Welcome back to without doubt one of the best TV series ever broadcast by the BBC,” one person said on X, which was formerly Twitter. “Blue Lights is simply magnificent.”

Another posted: “Here we go. One of the best shows of the year starting.” “Damn, this is such a good show,” agreed another viewer.
Someone else penned: “Shaping up to be a great season of Blue Lights. Great to have it back.”
One fan confessed they had “been waiting all year for this”, and another said they were in tears, posting on the platform: “GRACE ELLIS WELCOME HOME OH MY GOD I’M SOBBING.”
“What a series!” declared another impressed viewer, as somebody else remarked on the “strong opening”, which featured a tense chase.
One admitted: “Binged watched series three of Blue Lights in half a day as I do every series. Gutted as now I have to wait. Roll on series four!”
Series three of Blue Lights picks up with response officers Grace, Annie (Katherine Devlin) and Tommy (Nathan Braniff), who are no longer newbies at Blackthorn and are two years into their jobs.
The show’s new season will see them facing the dark underbelly of society, as they are plunged into a world where accountants and lawyers facilitate organised crime.
Meanwhile, new gangs have risen up to rule the city.
Blue Lights airs on BBC One.
