Fundraiser for brave Belfast child raises over £170K in 24 hours

“If anything could give us hope in dark times, it is the response we have seen from our family, friends, community and the generosity of people we have never met”

Over £170,000 has been raised for a Belfast child battling “the most difficult to treat and aggressive form of brain cancer”.

Four-year-old Bláthnaid Ní Mhaoilmheanna was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in May of this year and within three days, the child had emergency surgery to remove the tumour.

The family then got results confirming the worst. The tumour had regrown. The family have said there are a number of additional treatments not available on the NHS that could improve their little girl’s outcomes, and they are seeking additional expert intervention in Germany, with immunotherapy treatment here costing £140,000.

A Go Fund Me page was set up on Friday, and the generosity of Bláthnaid’s community, along with donations from strangers and family and friends, has saw the target reached already- to over £173,000 on Saturday afternoon.

In a statement issued by the family, they said: “We did it! Cumhachtach! Powerful! If anything could give us hope in dark times, it is the response we have seen from our family, friends, community and the generosity of people we have never met – all who have rallied around our Bláthnaid in the last 24 hours.

“We have smashed our target to raise £140,000 to get her potentially life saving care and people are still donating from across the country and around the world.

“There are not enough words to convey our thanks to each and every single person who has contributed in any way. The fact that we managed to reach our target within 24 hours is testament to our amazing community who have gone above and beyond to share our Bláthnaid’s story. To say we are filled with pride would be an understatement.

“Go raibh céad míle maith agaibh ó bhun ar gcroíthe. At this stage, our costs are very much approximate as we begin this next stage of Bláthnaid’s journey.

“Every single penny will go directly to Bláthnaid’s care and treatment; everything thereafter will be donated to the amazing charities that have supported us so far and who work so hard every day to support kids like Bláthnaid and families like ours. Our faith in humanity is often tested these days, but what we have seen over the last while has proven that the world is full of good people and good will.

“What you all have helped us to achieve in the last 24 hours shows us that special things are possible and miracles can happen. You have given us, and Bláthnaid, hope – dóchas.

“We don’t know what the next few weeks or months hold for us, or if we will require further treatment after Germany. But you have all given us the means to get that far, and for that, we are eternally grateful. To everyone who shared our story, donated and sent messages of hope and support, thank you all so much. It will take us a long time to get round to thanking you all personally but we will make every effort to do that in the coming weeks and months as we push on to get Bláthnaid the best care available.

“Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. We all live in each other’s shadows and we are very grateful to be living in the shadow of a community as inspirational as ours.

“Keep an eye out over the coming weeks and months as we continue to spread the word and raise awareness about Bláthnaid’s journey. We will keep you all updated as and when we can. Míle buíochas libh go léir. Grá Mór, Dóchas do Bhláthnaid.”
