House of Guinness star Anthony Boyle opened up about how acting saved him after he was expelled which led to him attending an all-girls school because it was the only that would take him in
Actor Anthony Boyle went to an all-girls school on the Falls Road – after being expelled from his previous school in Belfast.
The performer, who is the lead star in Netflix show House of Guinness, opened up about his youth during an interview on The Late Late Show where he also revealed how he left “producers raging” during the final day of filming.
From the age of 16, he attended St Louise’s Comprehensive College, an experience he described as the making of him, because it led to his acting career where he has had prominent roles in shows like Say Nothing and The White House.
Speaking to RTÉ host Patrick Kielty, Anthony, 31, said: “I got expelled from boys schools in Belfast and the only one that would take me was an all-girls school on the Falls Road called St Louise’s. There was 2000 girls and ten boys.”
Asked how that worked out for his teenage self, Anthony, who deliberately sinked lower into his chair, joked: “It worked out alright, it worked out alright Paddy, good craic.”
And explaining why it was such an important moment in his life, he said: “It was such a mad experience, you’re 16 and suddenly there’s 2000 girls.
“But it was great, it was the making of me you know because there was such a good drama department in the school and because of that I got to act every day as opposed to learning about geography or something I didn’t want to do.
“So I got to do what I loved every day and they needed males for the parts so I got to play loads of different things for the two years and it was good craic.”
He previously explained to the BBC that school was never for him and that he would distract the class before he was eventually expelled. Anthony described himself as “very creative” and sitting down and following orders was challenging.
In another interview, he explained how he had behaviour problems and he did “crazy s**t” during a time he had not yet been diagnosed with dyslexia.
All eight episodes of House of Guinness were released on Netflix on September 25 and it examines the “powerful and debaucherous” Guinness family while they are on the precipice of greatness in the 1860s.
Anthony plays Arthur Guinness who is a gay man who takes charge of the famous brewery. And speaking on The Late Late Show, he offered a glimpse into the mindset of his complex character.
He said: “He would be much more interested in s****ing fellas, drinking Guinness and having the craic in London but he has to come over and sort of pretend to be straight because of the time he is in and run the brewery because at that time if you were gay, you got about 20 years hard labour, so it was essentially a death sentence.”
