Rory McIlroy was left in stitches after world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was brutally mocked ahead of Team Europe and Team USA going head to head at the Ryder Cup
Rory McIlroy couldn’t contain his laughter when a podcast presenter savagely ridiculed Scottie Scheffler’s putting abilities right to the American’s face.
McIlroy, 36, will spearhead Team Europe’s challenge when the Ryder Cup kicks off on Friday. The continent’s aspirations will largely rest on the Masters champion, just as Team USA’s fortunes will depend heavily on their talisman and world No. 1 Scheffler.
Prior to the golfing superstars heading to Bethpage Black, they participated in a video segment also including Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood. They were engaged in a Ryder Cup twist of Mr and Mrs, which involved answering questions before writing their responses on white cards.
Scheffler and Morikawa faced the question of which one they would rely on for a 15ft putt to secure Ryder Cup victory. Following Scheffler’s response, he was caught completely off guard by a cutting remark from the presenter.
The presenter initiated the exchange on the TaylorMade Golf podcast, by enquiring: “Your team has a 15ft putt to win the Ryder Cup. Who is taking it?” Scheffler responded: “It’s between us two? I think Collin’s going to be nice and say me.”
Presenter Johnson Wagner, without missing a beat, replied: “Okay. Really? As bad of a putter as you are?” Scheffler handled the jibe gracefully and quipped that Morikawa was “not a smart guy.”
Following Wagner’s barb, McIlroy, stunned by the remark, was left laughing in shock and amusement. Ironically, Morikawa did back Scheffler to be the man to seal the winning putt, writing his name on the card.
The presenter then questioned McIlroy about whether he believed Fleetwood would shoulder the responsibility himself or pass the challenge to the Holywood born star. The five-time major champion replied: “I would think similar to what Scotty said. I think my partner is going to be nice to me and choose me.”
Much like Scheffler, McIlroy predicted accurately as Fleetwood indeed selected the Masters champion to attempt the 15ft putt. Given the exceptional 2025 McIlroy has experienced, few would criticise Fleetwood for trusting the World No. 2 to deliver what could prove a historic putt.
McIlroy brought an end to more than a decade of anguish on the course when he claimed the Masters earlier this year, displaying ice-cold composure to overcome Justin Rose in a thrilling play-off. His landmark victory not only concluded an 11-year barren spell without a major, it also enabled him to complete the career Grand Slam.
He will be completely determined to claim his sixth Ryder Cup, having featured in every edition of the tournament since 2010.
Reflecting on his involvement in the prestigious competition, he recently said: “This is my seventh Ryder Cup. Am I going to play in another seven? I don’t know.
“I’m probably on the back nine of my Ryder Cup career, and every one that I get to play in from now on is very, very meaningful.”
