The Enniskillen native has thanked those who have offered support following the tragic death of the mother of two
Former Northern Ireland international star Michael McGovern has shared a heart-breaking post on social media following the death of his wife Leanne.
The former Celtic goalkeeper and his partner had two children together, Kieran and Meaghan. As the news broke on Saturday morning of the mother of two’s sad passing a number of tributes were posted on social media.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Leanne McGovern, beloved wife of former Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern,” the Irish FA posted on their official ‘X’ page.
Now, McGovern has taken time to share the news and thank those who have offered their support.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I share the news of the passing of my amazing wife, Leanne,” said the Enniskillen native. “Our hearts are broken, but we are so grateful for the love and support we’ve received. Thank you.”
McGovern, who won 32 caps for his country, was one of the stars for Northern Ireland during Euro 2016 producing a memorable performance against Germany.
He had met Leanne during his spell with Celtic and recalled in an interview with the Scottish Sun last year who the pair hit it off despite her love for Glasgow rivals Rangers.
“I met Leanne on a Celtic Christmas night out in Glasgow when I was 21. We got married in 2011 at Glenbervie House,” he recalled.
“Kieran (their son) is 11 and a big Celtic fan. Meghan (daughter) is eight and a Rangers fan.
“Leanne’s actually a Rangers fan too and so is her dad, so there can be a bit of fun on Old Firm days.
“Kieran plays for the Charlie Miller Academy while Meghan turns out for Cambuslang Soccer Centre, but neither are keepers.”
