It was another rollercoaster day for McIlroy who had his mother Rosie and dad Gerry at The K Club this week
Rory McIlroy doesn’t do things the easy way and why would the Amgen Irish Open 2025 be any different. It was another rollercoaster day at the K Club as Rory came from four behind to claim his second Irish Open title – both at the same venue.
Joakim Lagergren of Sweden looked the likely winner with a two shot lead on the last hole but home favourite McIlroy produced a brilliant eagle on 18 to send the K Club wild and take the event to a play-off. It was the only eagle on 18 all day at the K Club.
At the third play-off hole, Lagergren found the water with his approach and McIlroy’s birdie was enough for victory. It caps a special week for McIlroy who had his parents Gerry and Rosie at The K Club.
Looking to win his second Irish Open after triumphing at the same course in 2016, McIlroy did not have his best golf on the front nine, bogeying the first hole and struggling to capitalise on some brilliant drives.
But the Holywood man started to feel it on the greens, making a 38-foot putt on the second hole, an 8-foot putt on the third hole, and 42-foot putt on the fifth hole.
The Masters champion hit a wayward tee shot on the ninth hole, but he hit a terrific recovery shot to set up his fourth birdie of the round and tie the lead at that point with Adrien Saddier, Joakim Lagergren and Rafa Cabrera Bello on 14-under-par.
McIlroy failed to make a birdie on the par five 10th hole and missed another opportunity for birdie on the 11th hole but saw his horse shoe putt remarkably drop in on the 13th to take the lead.
From there things fell a little flat and Lagergren looked poised for victory until that magic moment on 18 for eagle.
Shane Lowry took home €82k while Tom McKibbin won €67k for finishing 20th.
