The American president took to social media on Sunday to make his views known on the Ryder Cup captaincy and he doesn’t agree with Rory McIlroy

Donald Trump has called for Keegan Bradley to select himself as a playing captain for the Ryder Cup, just days after Rory McIlroy said it’s not possible.

Bradley finished 11th in the Ryder Cup rankings and put in a good season-ending performance at the Tour Championships. All eyes will be on him if he selects himself as a playing captain at Bethpage.

Rory McIlroy revealed earlier in the week that he had been approached about the possibility of being a playing captain at Adare Manor in 2027 and shot the idea down.

“The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon has come up and I’ve shot it down straight away because I don’t think you can do it,” he told reporters earlier this week.

“If you’d have said it 20 years ago I’d say it was probably possible to do, but how big of a spectacle it is and everything that’s on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in.

“There’s a lot of things that people don’t see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big.

“Really, the captain’s only going to be able to play one session on Friday, one session on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice if he’s playing well?

“Look, it’s just my opinion, but I think it would just be very difficult to do.”

But Donald Trump gave Bradley his Presidential seal of approval with the captain picks set to be announced on Wednesday.

“Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team – As Captain!!!” he wrote on Truth Social. “He is an AMAZING guy.”

Trump also announced that he would be attending Day One of the event which takes place next month.

Rory McIlroy is the top qualifier for Team Europe, while Shane Lowry now must rely on a Captain’s Pick after falling outside of the automatic top six picks on the final day. However, it would be a massive surprise if he wasn’t picked.
