Coronation Street star Sally Carman has opened up about her character Abi Webster’s affair with her brother-in-law Carl
Coronation Street actress Sally Carman has shared her thoughts on her character Abi Webster’s latest plot, which involves her beginning an affair with her brother-in-law, Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard).
In the ITV drama, Abi is married to Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell), but following her initial encounter with Carl in recent episodes, chemistry ignited between them, leading her to develop romantic feelings for her husband’s brother.
The betrayal has prompted Abi to question her marriage to Kevin. The latest episodes have shown her recognising that while she has deep affection for her spouse, romantic love has faded.
Star Sally has disclosed that the plot has proved “really tough” as it appears increasingly probable that Abi and Kevin will separate, resulting in reduced screen time with colleague Michael.

Chatting to Digital Spy, Sally remarked: “This storyline – as brilliant as it is and I am loving it – does mean that potentially I might have to work less with Mike Le Vell, who plays Kev Webster, in the future.
“That has been really tough because I feel like we’re married! We’re ‘work wife, work husband’ – we have that relationship and he’s got my heart forever.”
She continued by confessing she’ll “miss working with him” as he’s a “dream” to perform alongside and she has come to “adore him” through the years, reports Leicestershire Live.
Sally anticipates that Abi’s bond with Carl could result in “disaster,” noting, “I don’t think it would be wise for Abi to totally trust Carl in any capacity whatsoever.”
The soap star hinted at “fireworks” for Abi as Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) has discovered her affair, a situation that can only lead to trouble.
In recent episodes, Carl and Tracy shared drinks, during which she speculated that he had fallen for Abi. He attempted to mislead her by claiming he was visiting an ex in Wales.
Nonetheless, Tracy continued to harbour suspicions about the pair, and her doubts were confirmed when she saw them in a compromising position through a window.
It’s yet to be seen how Tracy will use this information, but it seems improbable she’ll let it slide.
Coronation Street airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 at 8pm.
