The local authority has issued some essential advice to beach users

Millisle Beach

Users of a popular Co Down beach have been warned the local council is starting a pest control programme to deal with a rodent problem in the area.

Ards and North Down Borough Council have said that from Thursday, August 21, it will be carrying out pest control at Millisle Beach which could last up to three weeks.

It is taking place due to the “growth in the rodent population” at the beach and poison bait will be put down in the area.

The council has issued some advice to beach users saying they should;

  • Keep all pets on leads / under strict control at all times, on all parts of beach
  • Supervise children at all times
  • Take any food waste away with you
  • Do not feed the birds as this also feeds the rats.

It has also said that if anyone suffers any accidental poisoning they should report to the emergency department as soon as possible.

An Ards and North Down Borough Council spokesperson said: “In case of accidental poisoning, contact Emergency Department as soon as possible. For pets, contact your vet.

“In order for us to arrange appropriate disposal, please report sightings of any dead rats to: env.health@ardsandnorthdown.gov.uk

“Please provide as much location detail as possible.”
