I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star Martin Kemp was once in the running to play James Bond, but his wife Shirlie has admitted she was not keen on the idea
Martin Kemp’s wife has admitted she wasn’t sure about her husband becoming the next James Bond.
The Spandau Ballet star – who is currently battling it out in the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here jungle – was once considered for the iconic 007 role, but spouse Shirlie has revealed she had reservations about it.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, she explained that TV star Martin, now 64, was in his thirties when the opportunity arose, reports the Express.
“I remember him going for the audition,” she said. “I was worried, I didn’t know if I wanted my husband to be the next Bond.”
“That’s too much pressure,” she continued. “It’s like, oh my goodness, if he became Bond, what would that mean?”

“And all those actresses around him. I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know if I want him to be the next Bond’.”
Shirlie, who wed Martin in 1988, also thought that her husband’s accent might get in the way of him securing the secret agent role anyway.
“He has got a Cockney accent,” she explained. “So I wasn’t sure if he’s… I’ve never heard of Cockney Bond.”
She mentioned she couldn’t remember exactly when Martin was considered for the position, but recalled he was in his 30s when it happened.
Shirlie, who shares TV presenter son Roman with Martin, also spoke to This Morning hosts Rochelle Humes and Dermot O’Leary about how her husband was coping in the Australian jungle.
The hosts labelled Martin the “camp dad”, to which Shirlie responded: “Oh, absolutely, that’s in his nature. You know, he’s not going to pretend to be like that. People will… I think they’ve already said it, you know, Martin, like the father figure.”
She also confessed to feeling “feel a bit embarrassed” watching Martin on the show, elaborating: “I’m thinking, what’s he going to say? I feel cringy.
“And also, the next day, everyone’s going to say, ‘Oh, I heard this, heard that about you’.”
This Morning broadcasts from 10am on ITV during weekdays.
