I’m A Celebrity star Martin Kemp has bravely opened up about his health battle
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant Martin Kemp shared details about his brain tumour ordeal during Wednesday’s episode.
The Spandau Ballet icon, 64, received his diagnosis of two brain tumours back in the 1990s when he was merely 34 years old.
A medical check-up in the 90s included an MRI scan which uncovered two substantial brain tumours. Surgeons removed the larger tumour whilst the smaller one was eliminated through advanced radiotherapy treatment.
Although these treatments proved successful, Martin continues to experience lasting effects, disclosing to his jungle companions on Wednesday’s show that he has developed dyslexia as a result of the procedures, reports the Daily Star.
Whilst discussing reading difficulties, Martin explained: “I’m dyslexic, when I read all the ends of the words jumble around.”
Clarifying the cause, he stated: “Mine is from an operation, taking away a brain tumour” whilst informing his fellow contestants that he had two brain tumours removed in 1995.
Martin then recounted how, whilst filming a programme in Canada where he portrayed a professor, he visited the makeup department to have a bald cap fitted, describing: “I could hear the whole of the makeup wagon go quiet because you could see this lump on the back of my head.”
The former EastEnders actor continued by explaining that the tumour had begun growing into the bone, requiring surgery just two days later.
He added: “They zapped me with stereotactic radiation.”
Speaking about the effects of the brain tumours and the surgical procedures, he confessed: “For a while I lost everything, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t see, I was a train wreck afterwards.”
Martin added that although he is now recovered, he has been left with dyslexia.
This follows the singer’s previous discussion about his brain tumours on his joint podcast FFS, My dad Is Martin Kemp, alongside his son Roman Kemp.
He disclosed: “When I was 34 and I went through that brain tumour stuff, I was practically resigned to the fact that I was going to die, but I was quite happy with my lot.”
In a poignant moment, he continued: “Every year that I live, every month that I’m alive is like a bonus.”
I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! airs nightly at 9pm on ITV1, STV, ITVX & STV Player.
