A second man arrested on Tuesday has been released to be reported to the Public Prosecution Service
Police investigating the attempted murder of PSNI Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell have tonight charged a man in his 70s.
Mr Caldwell – now retired from the PSNI – was shot several times while he was off duty and with his young son, packing up after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, Co Tyrone, in February 2023.
Following the arrest of two men on Tuesday night one man has been charged with several offences.
A statement from the PSNI on Wednesday November 19, said: “Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Serious Crime Branch, investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh in February 2023, have charged a man to court.
“The charge follows his arrest and subsequent detention under the Terrorism Act on Tuesday, November 18. The 73-year-old man, arrested in the Ardboe area, has been charged with the preparation of terrorist acts and perverting the course of justice.
“He is due to appear before Strabane Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning, Thursday November 20. As is usual procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
“A second man arrested on Tuesday November 18, aged 37, has been released to be reported to the Public Prosecution Service.”
Several people have previously appeared in court charged with offences linked to the shooting attack.
Mr Caldwell retired from the PSNI last December on medical grounds. He was awarded the King’s Police Medal in November of last year.
