The world number two missed on the DP World Tour Championship after losing a play-off to Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick, but he capped a remarkable year by winning a seventh Race to Dubai crown

Rory McIlroy almost enjoyed the perfect ending to a memorable and historic 2025 season, but he was denied the DP World Tour Championship after losing to Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick in a play-off.

McIlroy did, however, win a seventh Race to Dubai title and the $2,000,000 bonus prize that comes with it. He also pocketed $1.27 million for finishing second in the season-ending tournament at the at Jumeirah Golf Estate.

The overnight leader was leading by two shots midway through his final round, but droped shots on 12 and 16 meant he needed an eagle on the final hole to force a play-off.

He duly obliged in stunning fashion, but a bogey six when they replayed the 18th meant a par was enough for Fitzpatrick to take the title and the $3 million top prize.

McIlroy’s seventh Race to Dubai title now leaves him just one shy of Colin Montgomerie’s European Order of Merit record.

It has been a lucrative season for the Holywood native as be brought his season earnings to a staggering $21,993231.

Of course, he also completed the career grand slam with a brilliant win at the US Masters at Augusta back in April, becoming only the sixth golfer in history to achieve that feat.

Prior to that, he had already won twice on the PGA tour, winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am before defeating JJ Spaun in a play-off to win a second Players Championship at Sawgrass.

Those early-season wins helped McIlroy’s career earnings on the PGA Tour eclipse the $100,000,000 mark.

The 36-year-old played 16 events on the PGA Tour this season and finished outside the top 25 only twice. With three wins and eight top-10 finishes, the five-time major champion amassed $16,992,418 in total PGA Tour earnings this season.

His season and his victories would continue into the autumn as he claimed $1.02M for winning the Irish Open at the K Club on his return to the DP World Tour before helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup at Bethpage.

A record-breaking final round of 62 at the Abu Dhabi Championship last weekend saw him miss out on the play-off by just one shot as Aaron Rai defeated Tommy Fleetwood with McIlroy adding $569,628 to his coffers.

However, the prize money on offer for the DP World Tour finale means that, for the fourth time this year, McIlroy has earned more than $3million in a week with only his Masters success and his PGA Tour wins at Sawgrass and Pebble Beach bettering his winnings from this week.
