Normal service in an increasingly bizarre world has been at least temporarily been resumed with the exciting release of a new single by one of Australia’s finest exports, The Church.
‘Sacred Echoes (Part Two)’ indicates the extraordinary level of creative brilliance from Steve Kilbey and his cohorts continues unabated after an incredible period of creative abundance.
Kilbey says of the track
Bleak and yet beautiful, Sacred Echoes (Part Two) is unlike any previous Church song ever with its almost orchestral climaxes and its sombre mood. The lyrics and voice are the weariness at the point where hope and hopelessness merge. The music is by turns delicate and sparse turning into a churning monstrous racket. Intense, forlorn and exultant!
The track hangs in the ether like a necklace of sparkling diamonds, floating and shimmering in the universe. There is no gut-wrenching thunder: just a mesmerising circling riff in the distance over pattering drums and Kilbey’s distinctive rich vocals, delicate harmonies and a wall of of strings that builds up to a crescendo. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, with a fitting video from Donald Baldie that seems infused with nostalgia and a delicious melancholy:
‘Sacred Echoes (Part Two)’ is out now and available download and stream here.
