‘Linfield the worst run club I’ve ever seen in my life’ blasts former star Kyle Lafferty

Linfield said they “totally refute the allegations made by our former player made about his short time at the club.”

Kyle Lafferty has ruffled a few feathers at former side Linfield after labelling them as “probably the worst run club I’ve ever seen in my life”. Despite the ex-Northern Ireland and Rangers striker describing the current Irish Premiership champions as “my team growing up”, he revealed he felt like leaving just a fortnight after signing for the club in February 2023.

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, the 38-year-old said: “I’m happy I played with Linfield because they were my team growing up. It’s probably the worst run club I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m at Johnstone Burgh in junior football and they are run better than Linfield.”

The Fermanagh man’s further comments that the Blues “wasted money on stupid things” will certainly have raised a few eyebrows among the Linfield fanbase, given he picked up a generous wage during a spell in south Belfast that yielded zero goals in eight games.

He did, however, sing the praises of former international colleague David Healy, who has won six league titles as Linfield manager, albeit they lost out to Larne while Lafferty was at the club.

He added: “Linfield are the biggest club in Northern Ireland but, honestly, it was a shambles. I didn’t score for them, and I literally could have left after two weeks. I wasn’t enjoying my time there.”

When asked what the issue was with how Linfield were run, Lafferty said: “It was everything.

“They were paying a cafe around the corner £6,000 a month for the food for the lads. It would come in big silver containers and we would be having chicken curry before a game.

“David Graham (Linfield’s general manager at the time) tried to come in and change that. They wasted money on stupid things, and that is why I think what David Healy has done over there is incredible.”

In a statement to BBC Sport NI, Linfield said they “totally refute the allegations made by our former player made about his short time at the club.”
