There will be more than 300 riders travelling from all over Ireland to take part in what is known as the “Race of the Falling Leaves”
Local cycling club VC Glendale will be hosting their annual Cyclo-cross race day on this Sunday October 12 at their traditional venue of Falls Park.
There will be more than 300 riders travelling from all over Ireland to take part in what is known as the “Race of the Falling Leaves”.
Spectators will be treated to the exciting discipline of Cyclo-cross which is a mixture of off road biking similar to Mountain Biking with some running mixed in.
Races can be run over a mixture of gravel, grassland, mud, sand and forest trails with the riders often having to negotiate slippery turns, deep mud sections and runs up steps throwing the bike over their shoulder to carry it. It’s a common sight for the riders and the bikes to be completely covered in mud at the finish line!
VC Glendale will have the park decorated with Belgium flags and bunting reflecting their adopted club colours from the country which is this heart of the sport. It will be free entry and the park will remain open to the public all day and everyone is encouraged to come along and lend support to all the competitors but especially our local west Belfast clubs riders.
The race is a national series event and the day will start with the kids fun races at 10am, followed by the Under 12 ,14 and 16 races and Women’s race. There will also be the age category support races and the day will be capped off with the senior race featuring the very top riders in Ireland starting at 2.15pm.
