North Belfast fire at Flax Street flats underground car park treated as arson

A flat above the car park was damaged

A fire at an underground car park for flats in North Belfast is being treated as arson, police have confirmed.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service were called to the Flax Street area of Ardoyne at 6.29pm on Wednesday, October 1, amid reports of a vehicle on fire.

Six pumping appliances and a command support unit attended the scene, where a vehicle was on fire in an underground car park. The fire was extinguished, with the vehicle destroyed and a flat above the car park smoke damaged.

Police have issued an appeal for information following the incident. A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Police were made aware of a vehicle on fire at an underground car park at flats in the area shortly before 7pm on Wednesday evening.

“Fire Service personnel extinguished the fire which left the vehicle destroyed and a flat above the car park smoke damaged.

“Detectives are treating the fire as arson and are asking anyone with information, or who may have captured footage from the area which could assist with their enquiries, to contact them at Musgrave on 101, quoting reference 1241 01/10/25.

A spokesperson for the NIFRS said: “2 Appliances from Springfield Fire Station, 1 Appliance from Westland Fire Station, 1 Appliance and a Command Support Unit from Lisburn Fire Station, 1 Appliance and 1 Hazmat Pump from Whitla Fire Station and 1 Appliance from Central Fire Station attended the incident.

“Firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle on fire at Flax Street, Ardoyne, Belfast. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used 2 hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

“Firefighters used gas monitors to ensure all readings were normal. The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate ignition and the scene was handed over to the PSNI. The incident was dealt with by 7.54pm.”
