Rory McIlroy’s wife Erica Stoll has last laugh over disgusting abuse and divorce jibes

She was subjected to vile abuse and cruel jokes from USA fans at the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup stands as one of golf’s most intensely fought battles on the sporting calendar, yet nobody anticipated the shocking scale of hostility directed towards Team Europe – particularly targeting Rory McIlroy.

The Holywood man wasn’t alone in facing vicious mockery and heckling from American supporters – his wife Erica Stoll also endured the ordeal whilst cheering on her husband during the three-day clash. However, the 38-year-old ultimately secured the last laugh.

Erica endured having beer hurled at her and became a constant target for the New York crowd’s ridicule, with spectators even making cruel jibes about McIlroy’s decision to withdraw his divorce filing against her last June.

At one stage, she was brought to tears by the venomous abuse directed her way, prompting McIlroy to intervene and tell the crowd to ‘shut the f*** up’, reports the Mirror.

In the end, the hostile reception backfired spectacularly; Team Europe secured a thrilling 15-13 triumph following a nail-biting concluding day at Bethpage Black on Sunday.

Footage capturing their victory celebrations revealed Erica’s perfect riposte to her detractors.

One video recorded by Justin Rose’s caddie, Mark Fulcher, captured the squad on their team coach delivering their rendition of The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’.

The players could be heard chanting in harmony, “He’s in your head, in your head…. Rory, Rory, Rory” whilst gathering around McIlroy and his wife seated beside him.

Erica appeared radiant and joined in with the chorus, champagne flute firmly in hand throughout. Members of Team Europe have come forward to commend Erica for her handling of the hostility directed towards her.

“I actually had no idea that Erica had a beer thrown at her yesterday, so fair play to Erica, she didn’t bring that to the team room, we didn’t make that a big deal,” Justin Rose revealed. “It’s news to me, which says a lot about the strength of Erica and everybody in this team today.”

Shane Lowry chimed in: “I was out there for two days with Erica McIlroy and the amount of abuse that she received was astonishing.The way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable and kudos to her for that.”

Rory also praised his wife Erica for her “class and dignity” following an incident where a USA fan doused her with a drink prior to Europe’s renowned Ryder Cup victory.

“Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman. You know, she handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has. I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight,” he declared.

McIlroy native first crossed paths with New Yorker Erica at the same event 13 years earlier in 2012. They tied the knot in 2017 and welcomed a daughter, Poppy Kennedy, three years on.

In May 2024, the couple hit a rocky period when the professional golfer filed for divorce. However, just one month later, he announced they’d chosen to remain together.
