Northern Ireland weather latest as ex-Hurricane Humberto set to hit

Strong winds and heavy rainfall could be on the way

Weather conditions across Northern Ireland and much of the UK are set to become unsettled over the next week or so due to two hurricanes currently in the western Atlantic.

Hurricane Humberto is close to a second hurricane – Imelda – with both set to sweep eastwards across the Atlantic. Although actual hurricanes aren’t set to reach the UK, the remnants of the storms may bring spells of disruptive weather.

The Met Office said the wet and windy conditions are likely to spread over much of the UK from Friday and into Saturday, but there is some uncertainty on the exact conditions expected.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: “The situation becomes more complex later in the week as tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda, currently over the southwest Atlantic, influence our weather, increasing the risk of a deep low developing near the UK.

“If this materialises, we could see some very strong winds as well as further heavy rainfall Friday into Saturday, but at this time the development and track of this system remains uncertain. We’re monitoring this closely.”

A yellow rain warning has been issued for western Scotland from Wednesday evening until Friday. The Met Office said there is a possibility of further warnings being issued later this week as the picture becomes clearer.

The current forecast for this week in Northern Ireland shows Wednesday will be “cloudy with occasional spells of rain, more persistent to the west of Lough Neagh. Best of the shelter around the east coast. Maximum temperature 18 C.”

The outlook for Thursday to Saturday reads: “Remaining unsettled with cloudy skies and periods of rain, heaviest during Friday. Windy with gale to severe gales from late Friday.”
