Rory McIlroy will face world number on Scottie Scheffler after a “challenging” Saturday at the 2025 Ryder Cup with Europe on the brink of retaining the trophy
Rory McIlroy will face world number on Scottie Scheffler in the Sunday Singles following a day of drama at Bethpage Black on Saturday.
As Europe moved a step closer to retaining the Ryder Cup, much of the focus centered on the abuse aimed at Luke Donald’s team with McIlroy seemingly bearing the brunt.
The US Masters champion fired back at the crowd during Saturday’s foursomes, while it has emerged that an MC at the course has stepped down from her role after joining an expletive-led chant about McIlroy on Saturday.
In a statement, the PGA of America said Heather McMahan will not be performing her role as host at the first tee.
“Heather has extended an apology to Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup Europe and has stepped down from hosting the first tee of the Ryder Cup.”
McIlroy and Shane Lowry silenced the crowds in the best way possible as they sealed a vital four ball win over Cam Young and Justin Thomas as Europe took a commanding 11 1/2 to 4 1/2 lead into Sunday.
McIlroy hailed the brilliant performance from his playing partner, but gave a diplomatic answer when asked if the crowds went too far on Saturday.
“I’m drained, to say the least,” McIlroy said afterwards.
“I chipped in when I had to, but the credit goes to this man (Lowry) today.
“When you play in an away Ryder Cup, it’s really, really challenging.
“It’s not for me to say. People can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not. I’m just proud of us for being able to win today with what we had to go through.”
Lowry said the atmosphere was “something I’ve never experienced” with the Offaly native adding: “This is what I live for. This is it, this is the reason I get up in the morning, for stuff like this.”
McIlroy will be aiming to add to Team USA’s woes by keeping Scheffler pointless during the Ryder Cup in today’s singles.
Justin Rose will lead out Team Europe in the Ryder Cup Sunday singles against New York native Cameron Young at 5.02pm with Europe needing 2.5 points to retain the trophy.
McIlroy versus Scheffler is the fourth match at 5.35pm while Lowry is against Russell Henley in the eighth match at 6.19pm.
