Jim Gavin has secured support from Dublin football legends Paddy Andrews and Bernard Brogan as his presidential campaign gathers momentum. The former Dublin players, who claimed five consecutive All-Ireland titles under Jim Gavin’s guidance, were seen putting up campaign posters for the Fianna Fáil candidate.
Gavin, who serves as chairman of the prestigious Football Rules Committee (FRC), was unveiled by Taoiseach Micheál Martin as the Fianna Fáil candidate earlier this month, with his name set to appear on the ballot paper on October 24th.
The 54 year old will face off against Heather Humphries (Fine Gael) and Catherine Connolly (Independent) in the election.
Gavin’s campaign experienced a shaky beginning last week when social media users mocked one of his promotional videos featuring the former Dublin boss on a farm, reports the Irish Mirror.
Several users challenged the authenticity of Gavin’s ‘farming image,’ prompting the celebrated football manager to clarify how agriculture runs in his family. Earlier this week, Gavin hit out at “online hate and disinformation” targeting his campaign:.
“I refuse to accept that the price of participating in public life should involve putting your family and friends through waves of online abuse and malicious smears.
“This is not the cost of service – it is a failure of our digital culture,” he said in a statement.
