Sweden’s Alex Noren won the DP World Tour’s flagship event seeing off a field which included 11 of the 12 European Ryder Cup team
Rory McIlroy’s late surge on Sunday saw him climb some 33 places up the leaderboard, but he failed to mount a serious challenge after leaving himself too far back going into the final round.
His seven under-par final round of 65 saw him finish seven shots behind winner Alex Noren, who won after defeating France’s Adrien Saddier on the first play-off hole after the pair finished on 19 under-par.
The Masters champion was one of the early starters on Sunday after a disappointing level-par round of 72 on Friday saw him just make the cut.
However, he came agonisingly close to scoring a career first albatross on the par five fourth on the West Course.
After a perfect drive to the middle of the fairway, McIlroy’s second shot to the 494-yard par five stopped just six inches short of the hole. McIlroy sunk the putt for an eagle and also finished with an eagle on the par five 18th.
His compatriot Tom McKibbin also finished strongly on Sunday, carding a six under-par closing round of 66 to finish tied 11th.
McIlroy’s prize money for the event was $103, 275 after finishing in a four-way tie for 20th while McKibbin pocked $160,200.
Shane Lowry, like McIlroy, struggled to make the cut on Friday and finished the tournament in X place after a round of 71 on Sunday. The Offaly native took home $39,600 for his week’s worth.
For McIlroy and Lowry, their focus now turns to the Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black in a fortnight’s time.
