Brian also spoke on his fond memories of the late singer
Singer Brian Kennedy joined country legend Nathan Carter to sing one of the most iconic Christmas songs of all time ‘Fairytale of New York’ at the weekend.
The crowd at the event in the Culloden Hotel were surprised when the two singers joined up to sing the song. The original, sang by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, has become a Christmas staple since its release in 1988.
Brian spoke at the event of his fond memories of his late friend Kirsty MacColl. One in particular was when he spent Christmas with her and her family they would have sang the famous tune together.
However, they would have swapped the roles, Brian sang Kirtsy’s parts and she would have sang the parts that Shane MacGowan would have originally sang.
He also spoke on how much he missed the late singer and their friendship as it approaches 25 years since her untimely death. She passed away in December, 2000 following a speedboat accident in Mexico while she was swimming with her family.
The song was originally written by the lead singer of The Pogues Shane MacGowan along with Jim Finer who was also a founding member of the band. MacGowan has also since passed away in 2023 at aged 65.
MacGowan duetting with Kirsty MacColl on Fairytale of New York led to one of the best known Christmas songs of all time. Although it was kept off the coveted festive number one spot by The Pet Shop Boys, Fairytale regularly tops polls for the best Christmas song.
