Two arrested after man ‘attacked with golf club’ during race hate crime in Belfast

Witnesses at the scene said residents on the street were horrified to see the racist attack on a man who was coming home from work at a hospital

A man was reportedly racially abused before being attacked with a golf club during an assault in South Belfast.

Police received reports that a man was attacked in the Cussick Street area on Wednesday, October 22, at around 7.30pm.

It was reported that a man armed with a golf club shouted racist abuse at a resident in the street before attacking him with a golf club, causing him to suffer head injuries. The victim was also assaulted by a woman who had accompanied the male attacker.

Witnesses at the scene said residents on the street were horrified to see the racist attack on a man who was coming home from work at a hospital, with one neighbour intervening to stop it.

After police arrived on the scene a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences which include assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

A woman in her 50s was also arrested for a number of offences including common assault.

Both remain in custody at this time and police have said they are treating the attack as a racially motivated hate crime.

Inspector Green said: “Shortly before 7.40pm, it was reported that a man had been racially abused then struck on the head by a man armed with a golf club in the Cussick Street area. “The victim was also assaulted by a woman who was also at the scene. “Officers arrived and a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. “A woman aged in her 50s, was also arrested on suspicion of common assault and disorderly behaviour. “Both remain in police custody at this time. “This is being treated as a racially motivated hate crime and I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or anyone with CCTV or other footage that could assist with the investigation to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1397 22/10/25. “A report can also be made using the online reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport
