A Newtownabbey woman who was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma in her early 30s is encouraging others to be aware of the symptoms of blood cancer.

Catherine Caddell is sharing her experience of her diagnosis and treatment during Blood Cancer Awareness month to help raise awareness about the urgent need for early detection.

“I am sharing my story, and raising awareness of signs and symptoms, to help others. The symptoms I experienced included itchy skin – leading to severe bruising, night sweats, an unexplained lump on my left shoulder, extreme fatigue and weight loss.

“I want you to know the signs, but I also want you to know there is life after cancer –getting back to your fitness, looking after yourself, whether it’s joining the gym or a running club – as your health really is your wealth.

“If you think you have any of the symptoms I have shared today please, please, please go and ask for help. Advocate for yourself, make sure you are heard and get the help that you need.”

Catherine is supporting the Public Health Agency in highlighting the importance of blood cancer symptoms and the importance of contacting your GP if you feel something isn’t right.

Lorna Nevin, Nurse Consultant for Cancer at the PHA, said: “Blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, impact people of all ages and every story reminds us why it is so important to increase awareness.

“Many of us may not be aware of the symptoms of blood cancer, but the impact is serious. So, it is very important that we all recognise the signs and get checked early. Early detection can mean starting treatment sooner, which can help save lives.”

Signs and symptoms of blood cancer can also include:

General symptoms:

  • Unexplained fatigue or extreme tiredness (even after rest)
  • Persistent fever or frequent infections
  • Drenching night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Early fullness when eating

Bleeding and bruising:

  • Unexplained bruising (especially on arms or legs)
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Unusual bleeding

Swelling and pain:

  • Swollen lymph nodes (often painless, in the neck, armpit, or groin)
  • Bone or joint pain
  • Abdominal discomfort or swelling

Skin and circulatory symptoms:

  • Pale complexion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rashes or itchy skin

Lorna concluded: “If you notice any of these symptoms and you feel something isn’t right, do not hesitate to contact your GP. In many cases, these symptoms will turn out to be a sign of something far less serious, but it is always best to get them checked out. Early diagnosis of blood cancer can significantly improve outcomes.”
