EXCLUSIVE: Emmerdale star Katie Hill has spoken out on Charity Dingle’s complex surrogacy storyline

Emmerdale star Katie Hill has made a “tough” admission as she opened up on a Charity Dingle twist.

The 22-year-old actress started portraying Sarah Sugden on the ITV drama in 2017, with her character becoming embroiled in numerous explosive storylines.

This year saw Sarah left heartbroken after receiving a diagnosis of early-stage cervical cancer.

The storyline intensified when Sarah announced her intentions to pursue IVF treatment, with her now-fiancé Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) serving as the sperm donor.

Unfortunately, matters took a turn for the worse following Sarah’s cancer operation. While the cancer hadn’t seemingly spread, medics had to carry out an emergency hysterectomy, crushing her hopes of carrying a child, reports the Daily Star.

In an attempt to support her granddaughter, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) volunteered to act as a surrogate for Sarah and Jacob.

Nevertheless, she was left distraught when bleeding commenced shortly after the embryo transfer. Charity was therefore taken aback to discover she remained pregnant, before a startling revelation emerged.

Through a flashback sequence, Charity was shown to have had a one-night stand with her former partner Ross Barton (Michael Parr), who has subsequently insisted Charity undergo a paternity test.

This week, Ross watched on painfully as an overjoyed Sarah and Jacob displayed their initial ultrasound scan photograph. Will he disclose his potential fatherhood?

Speaking on the red carpet at the National Television Awards on Wednesday (September 10), actor Katie discussed the complex storyline, sharing her own shock at the Ross twist.

“It’s been so exciting. When the producers came to me and told me what they had coming up, I was really looking forward to it,” she said.

“It’s been challenging with all the cervical cancer and stuff, it was tough to film but so good. From an actor’s point of view, it’s such a good chance to do things like that.

“It’s Emmerdale, there’s always going to be a twist, but I think it’s a great storyline and I can’t wait to see where it goes.”

Discussing Sarah and Jacob’s future, Katie added: “I think right now they’re just smooth sailing and they’re really happy. They’re so excited to start this journey of being parents together.

“So, at the moment, hopefully it’s looking up for them and they’ve got a good future ahead of them.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 at 7.30pm and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX
