Emmerdale fans were left fuming as they noticed that a village icon appears to have been replaced
Emmerdale viewers are up in arms after a beloved Dales character was seemingly ‘substituted’ on the ITV soap.
This week’s episodes saw villainous John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) drag Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), his husband, over a cliff edge with him. Just moments prior, John had confessed his heinous deeds to Aaron.
Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) arrived just in time to rescue Aaron, but John managed to make a call to the emergency services, falsely accusing Robert of threatening him.
In a shocking turn of events, John leapt from the cliff, taking Aaron down with him. The emergency services swiftly arrived and rushed both men to hospital, where it was disclosed that Aaron had been put into an induced coma due to a brain haemorrhage.
Meanwhile, Robert found himself under arrest for attempted murder, despite vehemently proclaiming his innocence to all in the village, reports the Daily Star.
In Thursday’s episode (11 September), Robert was interrogated by the police at the station about a crime he did not commit. However, fans were quick to grumble that the detective assigned to the case was not the show’s favourite PC Swirling (Andy Moore).
The officer, portrayed by Andy Moore, has been a part of the ITV soap since 2004, making him one of the longest-standing recurring characters. Over the years, he has frequently been seen handling the village’s various infractions.
As such, PC Mike Swirling has become a familiar face in the village, particularly among the Dingle family.
With a new detective making their entrance this week, fans are concerned that the character of PC Swirling may have departed. One viewer queried on X: “Wheres swirling? Is he on leave or something? ?”.
Another chimed in: “This new copper is rubbish. Where’s our Swirling?” A third added: “Where’s Swirling when we need him? !”
Another fan expressed frustration: “Where’s PC Swirling when you need him? So underused, that guy. He should team up with Cain to show the truth.”
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
