Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins has opened up about her character Charity Dingle’s current storyline, which has seen her lie to her family about her pregnancy
Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins has given fans a sneak peek into her character Charity Dingle’s upcoming storyline.
Viewers of the soap will remember that recently, Charity, portrayed by Emma Atkins, has been attempting to conceive in order to bear a child for her granddaughter Sarah Sugden. Sarah is eager to become a mother following her emergency hysterectomy.
After undergoing an embryo transfer, Charity discovered she was pregnant, much to the dismay of her husband Mack Boyd, who had hoped they would have their own child together.
However, after a fall in the woods and subsequent bleeding, Charity feared the embryo transfer had been unsuccessful.
In response, Sarah’s grandfather Cain Dingle offered to fund another attempt. During a follow-up appointment, Charity was stunned to discover that she is indeed pregnant, reports the Daily Star.
In typical soap opera fashion, a series of flashbacks revealed that Charity had secretly slept with ex-lover Ross Barton (Mike Parr) following a heated argument with Mack.
Soap fans are now speculating that Charity is carrying Ross’ baby, rather than Sarah’s.
In forthcoming scenes, Charity, under the impression that Mack has abandoned their marriage, unaware he’s actually being held captive by John Sugden, is taken aback by an early ultrasound scan.
Unnoticed by Jacob and Sarah, there is a deep fear in Charity’s eyes as she gazes at the screen, concerned that the child may not be theirs after all.
Subsequently, when Ross turns up with Moses, an unsuspecting Sarah displays the scan photograph to Ross, who desperately attempts to conceal his alarm at viewing what could potentially be his own child.
Discussing the forthcoming storylines, Charity actress Emma revealed about her character: “I think she just feels at this point that, ‘Why does it matter who the real biological mother and father is?’
“Because at the end of the day, she’s thinking, ‘Sarah just needs a baby,’ because that chance has been taken away from her with her hysterectomy.
“So, at this point, she’s like, ‘Why can’t I cover this lie up? Why does Sarah need to know that it’s not her baby?’ She’s trying to convince herself at every avenue she goes down, ‘Okay, this is going to be okay, because the end of the day, Sarah just wants a baby to love in her arms. It doesn’t matter where this baby’s come from.’
“She’s convincing herself at every turn that it’s going to be okay.”
When asked whether Sarah might forgive Charity should the truth emerge, Emma hinted: “No. I think it’s such an ultimate betrayal to take it this far and lie.
“And obviously, Charity is digging a hole that is so big now that that there’s no going back, and she’s determined to just keep the lie up; keep it up and assume that she’s none-the-wiser and that it is in fact Sarah’s baby.
“She’s decided to jump in at the deep end and keep putting on the brave face. She can’t bear the idea of Sarah ever, ever finding out.”
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm.
