The PSNI has launched an investigation into criminal damage in Belfast which led to the closure of a local primary school on Wednesday.

Donegall Road Primary School closed “due to circumstances beyond our control” today. One parent told Belfast Live that they were alerted of the closure via text this morning. It is reported that “threatening” graffiti appeared in the local area.

The school posted online: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, school will not open today. A further message will follow in due course.”

Through the Education Authority, a spokesperson for Donegall Road Primary School told Belfast Live: “Donegall Road Primary School was unable to open today due to criminal damage to the school site.

“Whilst it would be inappropriate to comment further due to an ongoing PSNI investigation, we are working with all relevant parties to minimise disruption and reopen as quickly as possible. A further update will be provided to parents this afternoon.”

Police say they received a report of “criminal damage in the Maldon Street, Nubia Street and Empire Street areas of South Belfast this morning”.

“Enquiries are on-going,” they added.
