Glenshane Road crash sees five people taken to hospital

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched 6 Emergency Ambulances to the scene alongside the Air Ambulance

Five people have been taken to hospital following a crash in Co Derry on Tuesday morning. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 6:45am following reports of a “serious” road traffic collision in the Tamnadeese Road area of Castledawson.

The NI Air Ambulance was also tasked to the scene and a PSNI spokesperson said the road remains closed this morning.

Three people were transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and two people were taken to Antrim Area Hosptial after the crash.

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “NIAS dispatched 6 Emergency Ambulances to the scene. The Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS on board were also tasked to the incident.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, 3 people were taken to Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast by Ambulance. Another 2 people were taken to Antrim Area Hospital by Ambulance.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Motorists are advised that the northbound lane of the Glenshane Road, Castledawson, is closed to traffic from the Castledawson roundabout, due to a serious road traffic collision.

“Please seek an alternative route for your journey, and plan for delays in the area.”
