Coronation Street legend Charlie Lawson has previously been open about his financial struggles
Coronation Street legend Charlie Lawson, best known for his role as Jim McDonald, has revealed he’s taken up part-time work in a coffee van.
This comes just months after the actor opened up about his financial struggles and admitted that acting roles had become scarce.
The actor, who has graced the cobbles on and off for over a decade, is fondly remembered for his turbulent marriage to on-screen wife Liz, portrayed by Beverley Callard.
Charlie recently shared a video from his friend’s coffee van, Bridge 19 café on the Macclesfield Canal, where he occasionally lends a hand.
On X (formerly Twitter), he invited fans to visit: “Bridge 19 cafe Macclesfield canal, helping my good friend Lisa. Pop in Saturday and Sundays 9am until 2pm,” reports the Express.

In the video, Charlie warmly welcomed viewers to the café, saying: “Well folks, welcome to Bridge 19 café, which is on the Macclesfield Canal, going north something or other. Saturdays and Sundays, from breakfast time early in the morning until two o’clock.”
He also hinted at the chance of fan interactions, adding: “I’m here sometimes, cooking for you so you can get a selfie and all that sort of craic as well.”
His social media followers were quick to show their support, with one encouraging: “Keep up the good work Charlie.”
Another simply commented: “Excellent!” while a third expressed their wish to visit: “Wish I could get there right now.”
This new venture follows a challenging period for the actor, who labelled 2024 as his worst year in the entertainment industry. He confessed to struggling to secure work due to his political views.
Charlie previously admitted on The Nolan Show: “2024 is the most unsuccessful year I’ve had in 44 years. And there are a lot of issues to do with that. I’ve got lots of white hair, I’m 64 and there are less parts around.”
When pressed about how he manages his finances, Charlie added: “I work for GB News at the moment and I’ve got to renegotiate that contract next year and my wife Debbie runs a women’s refuge.
“I’m in the living room with my shooting gear on because I’m a field sportsman and because I can’t have the heat on all day and it’s Baltic over here.
“You have lean times, I mean last year the heat was on all the time in the winter, this year it will not be.”
Charlie first became part of Corrie in 1989 and portrayed Jim McDonald for a remarkable 11 years. He departed the show in 2000 – though he has made short comebacks, last appearing in 2018.
Coronation Street airs at 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX
