Plan includes new community recreational facilities

Belfast councillors have conducted a visit to the old site of Dunmurry Cricket Club, where there are plans to construct a social housing estate and recreational facilities.

The NI Planning Portal has indicated members of the Belfast City Council Planning Committee have completed a site inspection at the site of the former Dunmurry Cricket Club, Ashley Park, Dunmurry, Belfast BT17. The site is located north of 1 to 10 Ashley Park and south of 1 to 20 Areema Grove and Areema Drive, and to the west of Dunmurry Recreation and Football Club.

An application has been submitted to the City Hall for a residential development comprising 40 social/affordable housing units, with landscaping and associated works. It is a mixed use scheme, involving new community recreational facilities, including basketball court, and parkland.

The houses in the application, by BW Homes & Construction, are a mix of one to five bedroom properties. Neighbourhood consultation occurred in January this year.

A planning statement submitted as part of the application stated: “The proposed development has been carefully designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding residential and landscape context, while meeting the identified housing needs of the area.

“While the site is zoned for recreational use, it has not served this function for over a decade due to its private ownership and degraded state.

“The proposed scheme delivers substantial community benefits, decisively outweighing the loss of the existing underutilized open space. These benefits include the provision of much needed social and affordable housing, the creation of a high-quality urban park with recreational facilities, and significant biodiversity and environmental enhancements.”
